Senior center Barrett Jones became the first Alabama player to win the William V. Campbell Trophy, which honors college football's best scholar-athlete, Wednesday night in New York City.

Barrett Jones can add another accolade to his growing list of accomplishments.

The senior center became the first Alabama player to be honored with the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy, which honors college football’s “best and brightest” individual scholar-athlete, Wednesday night at the 55th National Football Foundation Awards Dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

“I want to thank everyone from Alabama who helped make this possible for me,” Jones said while accepting the award. “I want to thank Coach [Mal] Moore, Coach Saban and all of my teammates. I think many people know how good of a football coach he [Saban] is, but what he doesn’t get enough credit for is how good of a job he does developing young men.

“I also want to thank my parents and my family. When I left for college, my dad told me something that I will never forget. He said, ‘Barrett, never forget who you are and whose you are.’ I have tried to live up that my whole life.”

Earlier in the year, Jones was named one of 15 finalists for the award. As members of this year’s NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class, the other finalists will each receive an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. By winning the Campbell Trophy, Jones’ allotment was increased to $25,000.

“We are very proud of Barrett,” said Alabama head coach Nick Saban. “He is one of the finest human beings that I have ever had the opportunity to coach.”

Jones was the sixth Alabama football player to be named a NFF National Scholar-Athlete, joining Jonny Musso (1971), Randy Hall (1974), Steadman Shealy (1979), DeMeco Ryans (2005) and Greg McElroy (2010).

Jones is also a finalist for the Outland Trophy and Rimington Award.
